Help available for veterans in the Fairfax area
FAIRFAX—Agents at the Virginia Department of Veterans Services (DVS)
are fanning out across Northern Virginia to assist veterans with
filing claims for state and federal veterans benefits. Visits are
scheduled for the Loudon County Workforce Center, Middleburg Community
Center, American Legion Post 177 in Fairfax, the VFW Post 7589 in
Manassas as well as Dahlgren, Fairfax, Fredericksburg, Leesburg,
Stephens City, Warrenton, and Winchester. Agents also visit the
Pentagon and Ft. Belvoir. Visits to these sites will be at least
monthly and, in some cases, weekly.
Although the DVS has permanent offices in Alexandria, Front Royal, and
Quantico, agents spend at least one day every week on the road working
with veterans at locations such as American Legion and VFW posts.
Veterans and their family members will find a detailed schedule of DVS
agent visits and hours at
www.virginiaforveterans.com or by
calling one of the DVS offices.
DVS
agents help veterans apply for medical services and disability
benefits due to disease or injury incurred during or aggravated by
time-in-service or due to secondary medical conditions resulting from
a service connection.
Agents
also assist with other types of claims, such as veterans compensation
and pension claims, dependency and indemnity compensation for
widows/widowers and children of disabled veterans, widows’ pensions,
dependents’ education, veteran home loans and death benefit claims.
In short, DVS agents are advocates for veterans and their family
members. They help veterans with their paperwork, track the claim with
the VA, and represent veterans if they need to appeal a claim.
Statewide, the Department of Veterans Services operates 21 benefits
offices where veterans can work with veterans service agents. The
agency operates the Virginia Veterans Care Center (VVCC) in Roanoke
and the Sitter & Barfoot Veterans Care Center in Richmond. The VVCC
is a 240-bed long-term care facility offering nursing and domiciliary
care for veterans. The Sitter & Barfoot Veterans Care Center is a
160-bed long-term care center located adjacent to the McGuire Veterans
Medical Center. The agency also certifies that post-secondary
educational institutions meet G.I. Bill funding and eligibility
requirements, enabling veterans and family members to pursue
educational opportunities. DVS operates two cemeteries for veterans:
the Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia and the Albert G. Horton, Jr.
Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk. A third cemetery in Dublin,
Virginia is in the initial stages of development.
