Athletic News

Post 162's coed softball team is doing great. As of this writing, they are going gangbusters with 8 wins and only 2 losses. Keep up the great work Coach Robbie DaCosta.  (update 2 Jul:  Team now 10-2 and in 1st place.)

Post 162's American Legion League Baseball team is starting it's season.  Coach Andy Ihle is a capable teacher and we are hoping for a good season.  Their schedule can be found on our website:  http://www.valegionl 62.org

Auxiliary

Hello all you ladies!! Well it's time to wind down a bit. Poppies have been given out and the ladies have a grand total of $2,502.67 that has been collected - great job everyone.

Membership is at 115 for 2004.  Last year we closed at 129. Maybe it was just a slow year, but I know we can do better next year. Don't forget, the 2005 cards should be in next month. They should reflect a good address for mailing in your renewal.

We all wish Brenda Sigmon a speedy recovery from her surgery now that she is home - get well soon

We will be sending 8 members to the Department Convention this year.  We can read all about it in the next newsletter.

Remember ladies, there will not be an Auxiliary meeting in either July or August. Maybe we can get some sun on our vacations. We will meet again on September 9th promptly at 7:00 p.m.

Happy (belated or not) Birthday goes out to Sheila Grimes 4 August; Dorothy Hall 7 April; Janet Jacobs 13 May; Glenda DaCosta 29 August; and Marci Vogel 5 April.

Please don't forget that the annual Lorton Independence Day Parade is on Saturday 3 July this year. The Auxiliary has always participated - please, if you're interested be at the Post Home not later than 10:15 a.m. on Saturday morning.

Club News

On the first Saturday in May, Wendy Card and Laura Johnson engineered a Kentucky Derby Party. Wendy even went to Maryland to place some wagers on some of the members favorites.  Wendy and Laura acquired the food, ran the grill, and otherwise made sure everyone had a good time.

Thanks to Jim Byrne, our Wild Game Bar-B-Q was a success. He stayed with the grill for the duration and the heat.  Steve McCarthy provided DJ music, first outside and then later, at Vickie's urging, brought the equipment inside and kept our patrons around for a little while longer.

Also thanks to Paul and Rich Szala for donating the main courses. What a day and night.

We have a monthly 50/50 losing holder drawing on every 3rd Saturday. Winner need not be present to win. This money is used for parties and other patron events.

We will be having a Bar-B-Q on 3 July starting around 1:00 p.m.

Don't forget every Friday is Free Pizza night and our weekly 50/50 drawing.  Also Betty's Jukebox Nite's are 16 July and 6 August;  Megan's Chili Nite's are 19 July and 23 August. We will be having Karaoke on 17 & 30 July and 13 and 28 August.

Membership

For those of you who don't know me, let me provide you with my philosophy - Membership, both renewals and new member gains, is the most important American Legion Program that there is. If you are doing the things that keep your members renewing and doing the things that attract new members, you will always have the members that you need to do the other programs such as Boys State, Oratorical, Junior Law Cadet, Junior Shooting Sports, etc.

This past year for the first time in 4 years we did not make our membership goal. While I am hoping that this is just a small hiccup, we must take action now to prevent this from happening again.

If you like the American Legion (you must since you are still a member) talk to non-members about joining. If everyone would recruit just one new member this year, we would double our membership.

Soon after you receive this newsletter, you will be receiving your first 2005 renewal notice.  National Headquarters spends over $2.2 million dollars sending out renewal notices. Please renew with the first notice!! For 2005 let's get Post 162 back on the 100% membership track. For your information we now have the 2005 cards and they are beautiful. The background this year is the WWII Memorial!!

I feel it appropriate that not only I address the membership, the Operations Manager, Ms Ann Kuntz, should have an active input. She works very hard for the membership and their needs and Ann sees many of you on a daily basis.

Finance Corner

Hello Legionnaires, first I would like to give my thanks to those who supported me for a second year as your finance officer. I would also like to give appreciation to those who came to vote in opposition to me! Why? It shows you care and want to be heard. Your voice counts at elections, membership meetings and when properly presented, in daily conversations. You are the American Legion! Never forget that.

We have many things to try and accomplish this year. Some are trailing us from last year such as the Audit. This has not been forgotten, but with elections, Memorial Day events, Installation of Officers and other events, the Audit was slipped into the beginning of June. The Auditor has been contacted and it has been initiated. Once we have the findings and conclusions they will be presented to the membership in either the July or August membership meeting.

Another item that must be addressed is the loan we had approved last year. Establishing this loan will provide us needed capital to make immediate repairs and improvements, i.e. our undependable A/C system, the kitchen's fire suppression system (by law) and other necessary post improvements. The loan will also help establish a workable budget by having a set payment each month. These monies shall only be used for Post improvements and priorities recommended by committees, subject to Executive Committee scrutiny and approved at a membership meeting.

There are many other things I wish to convey to the membership but I cannot do it all in this one message. I will try to become a regular part of the Legion news and keep you informed as much as possible. Do you have ideas for the Legion? Write us, e-mail us, or come to the meetings and speak with us. Your input is important. Again, thank you for your support and let us all pull together for Post unity …

Post Clean Up

Many thanks to Betty & Katie O'Connor, Leroy Dodson, Tommy Castaldo, Dennis LaPorte, Charlie Voccio, Ray Harrigan, Paul Goodin, Alan Amos, Fred Hanson and Bill Strawsburg for participating in our Post Clean Up on 8 May. Not only did they accomplish the normal yard work, they cleaned out the storage shed, Bar-B-Q, lawn furniture and many other things that had been neglected. A special thanks to Ann Kuntz, our Chef for the Day.

Post Web Site

As some of you know, our web site is being updated and new content is continually being added. The Post calendar is an example. The calendar page is intended as the single source of all Post activities and events. A quick review of the calendar will keep you current on Post activities.  Another page contains photo albums of most post activities by or at the Post.  These pictures may be downloaded and/or printed by your browser. The "Installation of Officers" page lists all Post Officers installed at the June 4th ceremonies.

You are invited to use the website to stay current with Post activities and to share this site with your family and friends. Also be sure to refer potential members to this site.  If you have a personal website, be sure to send me a link to your site and include a link to the Post website on yours. This will improve search engine position for both linked sites.

We are always looking for comments, suggestions, links and content. Please use the "e-mail me" link at the bottom of the page to contact me.
