We've got a busy schedule coming up in the next two
months. Halloween, Early Bird, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, NASCAR
Party, and Christmas are all just around the comer. Also, enjoy our
regular football, karaoke, and everyday fun. See the enclosed
calendar or our website for upcoming events.
I need to thank all who helped out with the Annual
Picnic this year. We estimated a crowd of about 175 and we got several new
members during the event.
If you haven't renewed your membership, let's get it
going. You will receive the "Early Bird" stamp on your membership
card if you renew by 6 November and that entitles you to attend the Early
Bird Party that evening. Early Bird's may bring one guest. New
members are welcome to sign up any time prior to the 6th. Please,
let's get those renewals in NOW!! You are the key to our success.
We're finally making progress on the four core
projects. 1) The HVAC system for the Social Quarters is
nearing completion. Thanks to Lee Winters for his tireless effort on this
task. Hopefully it will be finished by the time you're reading this. 2)
The fire system for the kitchen should be installed early November.
This will help enable us to pass inspection and 3) get our hall
rentals back on track. We are renting the hall in a limited capacity but
should be in full swing soon. Call the Post for details. This is income
for our organization and needs to be completed. 4) The audit is
moving along but unfortunately it's a slow process.
Our Veterans Day ceremony will be held on Thursday,
11 November, at 11:00 a.m. The general public is invited and light
snacks will be served afterward.
I would like to remind our members that our regular
general membership meetings are on the third Saturday of the month@ 10:00
A.M. for approximately one hour. Check our web site
http://www.valegion162.org and see what you've
been missing. Catch up with pictures from our fun filled events and an
up-to-date calendar for upcoming events. Or call the Post for additional
information. We're always looking for extra hands to help out and
make our Post a success. Have a great Holiday Season.

As of this writing, we currently have 296 paid 2005
renewals for 70.6%. We are slightly ahead of our monthly goal (Nov 3 goal
is 65%). We are doing well but we can do better.
The American Legion has a program called
'Reconnect'. Simply put, it's a way for the Legion to identify
ourselves with the Active Duty Force. Post 267 in Columbus, Georgia
uses this program successfully in its efforts on Fort Benning. The
two top recruiters nation-wide for 2004 both came from this post. Using
the 'Reconnect' program they recruited over 500 new members in one year!!!
Since we have Fort Belvoir in close proximity and a Major Army Reserve
unit in our area, this program should work for us. More on 'Reconnect'
later.
Our Early Bird Dinner is scheduled for 6 November.
Cocktail Hour begins at 6:00 p.m. Buffet dinner to follow at 7:00 p.m. For
your musical enjoyment, we have the Bobby Brown Band performing after
dinner. All members who have renewed or joined for Legion Year 2005 are
invited to attend. You may bring one guest for each paid member. Guests
will be charged $25.00. When the band starts, a cash bar will be in
effect. Members may bring their own liquor, but not beer or wine.

Auxiliary News
Calling all Ladies! Membership is still
being counted. So if you still haven't renewed your Auxiliary membership
for 2005, please do so now and avoid the absence of money during the
up-coming holiday season.
Well it's getting to be that time of the year again.
The holidays are in sight. The Veterans Dinner will be held on Wednesday,
December 1st. If you have the time we can use the help,
especially with deserts.
We would like to thank everyone who participated in
the Auxiliary car wash. It was a huge success - we took in $422.00
for the morning.
Please remember to bring in your canned goods for
the Lorton Community Action Center's annual Thanksgiving and Christmas
food drives. The dates to bring the goods in are 21 November and 19
December (Please don't bring them in early we don't have any place to
store the goods).
Reminder: Your participation in Unit meetings and on
your committees is greatly appreciated. As the holidays approach,
please keep in your prayers those loved ones who are away fighting the war
on terrorism for our county.

On Jim Byrne
by R.J. "Shorty" Voder
On behalf of the Byrne family and myself, we wish to
thank everyone who signed up & brought a dish to Jim's wake on October 5th
to the Post with a special big thanks to all the bartenders who helped set
up and clean up. Also, it was thoughtful of the Post to donate the use of
the Hall and the paper and plastic products & condiments. I couldn't have
given Jim's last party without all your help & kindness. Thanks, again.
I also have put out a donation box for victims of
the recent spate of hurricanes in the lounge. We are accepting cash or
checks. Checks should be made out to the "Red Cross Hurricane Relief
Fund". Please help.

Army Museum
Coming to Fort Belvoir, Virginia is the new National
Museum of the United States Army. Work is now underway with an
opening date scheduled for the Army's 234th Birthday: June 14,
2009.
This is not to be a museum in the traditional sense,
but one that expects to utilize modem technology, display techniques, and
interactive methods that reflect and celebrate the history and heritage of
the Army.
This museum will serve as the capstone of a network
of Army Museums across America that commemorate the Army, the Army
Reserve, the National Guard, and the entire Army family
Through collaboration and support from Congress,
private industry and academia, this museum is expected to be a world-class
facility intended to make every citizen, soldier and veteran proud of the
American Army. It is located on a 55 acre site on Fort Belvoir, a
site that also overlooks the Potomac River and is only minutes from Mount
Vernon, Woodlawn Plantation, Gunston Hall and other historical sites.
The National Museum of the United States Army
educates and trains soldiers and the public by collecting, preserving,
documenting, researching, displaying, and interpreting the art, archives,
and artifacts of the United States Army.

We the bartenders (Rulers of the "Be nice to us or
you won't get no tickets or beer") have been thinking about the patrons
(Rulers of the "Give me tickets and beer or you won't get no tips") and
would like to truly say thank you for the efforts you have put in
to make our Post Home a better and more fun environment. We would also
like to thank certain people for their above and beyond efforts.
How could we not start with the smiley faces of
Laura and Wendy. Ohhh the Bar-B-Q and 'tators and beer can chicken, what
do these girls not do. Sam and her mind-blowing devilled eggs, macaroni &
potato salads. And if you haven't tried her tritip steaks your
missing something. Helen and Leona for their tongue-tantalizing deserts.
Then we have Cheryl who's always helping out with egg's or chips.
We also have our very own #1 Redskins fans George
and Dottie who don't just treat us with their taste teasing tacos but also
gives us the Redskins song every time they score a touchdown. We love it,
except we haven't heard it very often here, lately. Oh well, better times
are coming.
Then there's Bobby and Helen, we can't tell who has
the longer hair, but who cares when the BBQ, Red Velvet cake & other
delights arrive. When they're around, our tummies get treated
special. And we'll never forget Helen for always trying to make us
rich. If we ever hit the lottery, not exactly sure if the money or cake
would be richer.
And if it wasn't for Ray Harrigan and our website,
we'd never be able to keep our calendar straight or let everyone know what
we're doing on time. Also, Big Ray who has never failed to support us when
we take our ideas to him.
Where would we be if it wasn't for Sam Ramseur
taking those ideas to the House Committee. 'Course, it's great having Alan
Amos around to find stuff for us that we can't find. Wouldn't it be fun to
hide stuff & tell him we can't find it? HeeHee. We couldn't survive
without Rodney reminding everyone to look out for their "beertenders".
And sadly, we couldn't let it go without thanking
the late Jim Byrne, who devoted much of his life to us by cooking or
fixing something in the building. We'll miss you.
So a heart-felt thanks to all the members and guests
who have supported us and tried to make it nicer for someone else.
